Working of a hydraulic machine

The hydraulic liquid available is pressurized and the pressure is converted into force and motion. This force and motion can in turn be used in many different manners thus leading to the development of many different machine applications. Thus there are an immense number of advantages using hydraulics in the machine design. You need to get the working pressure, volume of pumping (discharge rate) and the right size of Hydraulic cylinders to get precise thrust force and variable speeds of movement. Thus hydraulic machines are found in a variety of applications. For example a hydraulic press can be used for compacting material or making material of different shapes, also hydraulic cylinders can be used for clamping jobs in work holding fixtures. In addition to which even metal cutting machine tools and special purpose machines use hydraulic systems extensively to operate moving slides. Hydraulics is widely used in material handing machines and earth moving machines as well.

To start with it requires a Hydraulic Power Pack. This is the central source from which the pressurized oil is supplied to hydraulic actuators in the machine. The hydraulic power pack normally consists of the following.

• Oil tank to store the hydraulic fluid which is specially formulated mineral oils, similar to lubricating oils of specific viscosity.
• It also consists of a hydraulic pump which is required to pump oil from the tank and deliver to the outlets at high pressures at desirable rate of discharge.
• It requires an electric motor of required power to drive the hydraulic pump.
• It is necessary to have different type of valves for different application like value for pressure relief, value for pressure regulation, control valves, and even direction control valves. The direction control valves are part of the power pack but alternatively can be mounted close to the hydraulic cylinders or actuators based on convenience and other design factors.
• Lastly elements like hydraulic oil filters, breather cum oil inlet and even oil level indicator and controllers, not to mention heat exchangers for cooling the oil are also required. 

Fluid air filter systems are hydraulic oil filters in India and have being so since a considerable amount of time.
